The story of the Bacardí family and company, set against the backdrop of revolutionary Cuba in the 1800s and the rise of rum, will be told in a series produced by Secuoya Studios and Arrivelo Producciones.
Showrunner and director Jonathan Jakubowicz (Resistencia, Hands of Stone, Secuestro Express) is at the helm of this project, which will be filmed in both Spanish and English and is inspired by real events documented in the Bacardí Archives, a private collection managed by the Bacardí company. The still-untitled series, which will have its own production team for a large-scale initiative, will recount a story of ambition, adversity, and family that begins with founder Facundo Bacardí Massó and his vision to create the world’s first light-bodied rum.
The series will narrate how the company persevered from its humble beginnings in the 19th century through countless difficulties, political turmoil, economic crises, and forced exile from its homeland. Founded in Cuba in 1862, Bacardi remains family-owned after more than 160 years and seven generations, and is currently the world’s largest privately held international spirits company, boasting a portfolio of over 200 brands.
“For the past two centuries, Bacardi has played a role in the events that have shaped Cuban history, while also being at the heart of one of the greatest business stories of all time. It is a true honor to bring this untold story to life with the help of its protagonists, who have graciously opened their archives to us. I have always dreamed of creating an epic production that captures the complex history of Latin America and its relationship with the United States and Europe,” said Jakubowicz about this project.
On behalf of the production companies, Brendan Fitzgerald, CEO of Secuoya Studios, celebrates the partnership with Arrivelo and emphasizes: “This incredible story deserves to be told, and we are confident that its generational tale of struggle and passion will captivate audiences.” From the perspective of the Galician company, its CEO, Andrés Arriaga, adds: “This undertaking is only possible thanks to the support of a production company of the caliber necessary to handle a project of this magnitude, Secuoya Studios, and its executive producer, David Martínez, who fell in love with this great story from the very beginning, just as we did.”
